WHAT CAUSES NECK PAIN?
Have you been experiencing pain in your neck? Is it difficult for you to turn your neck around comfortably? It is common for people to experience neck pain after an accident, after sitting for long hours, and after hunching over the workspace.
Neck pain can be a result of various factors:
Degeneration
One of the most serious car accident injuries, head injuries can cause lasting cognitive problems. People who are involved in high-speed car accidents can strike their head against the windows, dashboard or the steering wheel. This can lead to traumatic head injuries. Head injuries can be treated with extensive medical treatment and long-term chiropractic care.
Poor Sleeping Position
Do you often wake up with a feeling of stiffness or pain in the shoulders, neck or back? The number of pillows you use, the way you sleep, and the firmness of the mattress can affect the way how you feel while waking up in the morning.
Falling sleep with a lack of neck or head support increases your chances of waking up with a sore neck or a back pain.
Stress and Anxiety
Stress and anxiety are also associated with neck and spinal problems. Stress causes the muscles to tighten leading to pain. You must have heard people talk about holding tension in the neck. This tension often leads to pain in the neck and back.
Acute Torticollis
When the head is twisted to one side, it leads to a medical condition called torticollis. It can be extremely painful to straighten out the head. While it is a fairly common problem, the cause of this problem is yet not known.
According to neck and spine doctor, most cases of torticollis are caused due to minor sprains in the neck. It can occur overnight and the pain subsides within a few days. Sometimes, torticollis can also be a symptom of a severe health problem.
Whiplash Injury
When a person experiences a neck injury owing to a sudden back and forth movement of the head very quickly, it is called whiplash injury. This is named so because the movement resembles the crack of a whip.
While whiplash injuries often occur to people involved in car accidents, it can also occur as a result of sporting activities or because of a sudden movement of the neck.
Cervical Radiculopathy
Often referred to as a pinched nerve, cervical radiculopathy occurs when irritation of the nerve originating in the spinal cord travels to the neck and the pain radiates down the arm. The primary symptoms of pinched nerves are –
- Feeling of pins and needles in the arm
- Numbness in the arm
- Weakness in a part of the arms
Two of the most common causes of cervical radiculopathy are neck arthritis and a prolapsed disc.
Brachial Plexus Injury
According to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, brachial plexus is a collection of nerves that connect spinal cord in the neck to the hands. If a neck injury affects the brachial plexus, the pain can radiate to the arm.
One of the most common causes of brachial plexus injury is a blunt force trauma which can happen due to a car accident or a sporting injury.
